Let’s begin with an exercise!
If you were working on something, give it a rest. Focus on the little kitten’s eyes. When you will get back to work, you will definitely work better!
If you have been spending your time looking at the cute pictures of little pups and kittens, you must be doing great at work! We don’t say it but a 2012 study says its true.
A study in Hiroshima University lead by the professor of cognitive psycho-physiology, Dr. Hiroshi Nittono and his team revealed looking at a baby animal can help focus better.
The professor and his team gathered 48 people that included 24 men and 24 women as their subjects.
Each subject was given a matrix of digits to count the number of instances the largest and smallest digit appeared in the matrix without using their fingers.
8 appears two times in the first matrix and 0 appears 3 times.
After collecting answers from each of the subjects, they were shown pictures of cute animals, grown up animals, and food to complete exercise. Their answers were recorded each time so that experiment results could reveal what boosts productivity and focus.
The subjects who looked at the images of baby animals between the exercise improved the most.
Caring for babies (nurturance) not only involves tender treatments but also requires careful attention to the targets’ physical and mental states as well as vigilance against possible threats to the targets. If viewing cute things makes the viewer more attentive, the performance of a non-motor perceptual task would also be improved.
The research team at the University decided to believe that the baby animals’ cuteness can trigger a careful, deliberate attitude that helps increase performance.
So just make sure you have an album of cute little animals saved on your desktop that you can keep looking at to improve your performance.
