At the inaugural AI Day, Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk revealed Tesla Bot, the company’s first humanoid robot powered by artificial intelligence. Musk added that a prototype of the robot will be unveiled next year.
Elon Musk adds that the robot is being built for general purpose usage and is intended to be friendly and navigate through a world designed for humans. He also added that it is developing it in a way that humans can run away from it and overpower it, in case such a need arises in the future.
The Tesla Bot will weigh 125 pounds and have a walking speed of 5 miles per hour, and its face will be a screen that displays important information. Apart from labor work, it is being made to replace tasks like going grocery shopping.
It is codenamed Optimus and measures around 5’8″ tall. Tesla Bot will be made using the same technology that the company uses for self-driving in its electric vehicles. Elon Musk believes that the humanoid robot could revolutionize society.
Do note that Tesla isn’t the only carmaker to be working on a robot. Honda has had its Asimo robot for decades now and companies like Toyota and General Motors also have their own robots. Given that it’s a Tesla product, there’s a higher possibility that the Tesla Bot won’t be unveiled next year.
While it makes sense for the company to have multiple projects based on the same technology, current Tesla car owners probably want the company and Elon Musk to focus on electric vehicles.
