Clubhouse is a very popular application that became the center of attraction during the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, the app has been limited to iOS users only but now it is available for all Android users globally.
The app is owned by Alpha Technologies, works on an invite-only model. In the app, users can communicate in voice chat rooms that accommodate groups of up to 5,000 people. The audio-only app hosts live discussions, with opportunities to participate through speaking and listening.
The Android version of the app was in the testing phase in the United States for a couple of weeks as the company aims to strengthen its potential growth in the market. As noted, ever since its release in March last year, the app has been exclusive to the iOS platform.
It is now available for download through the Google Play store and is compatible with devices running Android 8.0 or later. Despite the Android version being available globally, Clubhouse is as yet dependent on the waitlist and invite framework which means that the users will require an invite from a current user to join.
When Clubhouse was launched in 2020, it had the entire market for itself but since then it has gained the attention of other tech giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Discord to enter the social audio space market, giving Clubhouse a tough competition.
Clubhouse attracted a large number of users after celebrities hosted audio conversations on the platform earlier this year. However, after reaching the milestone of 9.6 million downloads in February, the app’s downloads fell 72 percent to 2.7 million in March, according to mobile app analytics firm Sensor Tower. The number dropped further to 900,000 in April. However, with the release of the app in the Android market, the app is hoping to regain its popularity in the market.
