An 8 year old student of Colorado’s Bennett Elementary School is being tested for STDs (Sexually transmitted diseases). This happened when he mistook a used condom for a balloon.
On Tuesday, the 14th of April, he was at school’s playground when a teacher saw him trying to blow the balloon. “He’s at risk for HIV, Hepatitis C, Herpes, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia,” the boy’s mother, Alicia told 7News
He was then brought inside to wash his hands and mouth. One of the staff members threw away the condom before it could be tested. The kid now must go through repeated blood testing which will be done over the course of the next year as the diseases sometimes take a year to emerge. Alicia also understands that in case if he were found to have a disease, it would change her son’s life in a terrible way.
She said, “that would be a lifelong [process], millions of dollars in medical bills. I mean this is just an unbelievable tragedy.”
The boy is currently being tested for HIV, Hepatitis C, Herpes, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
Alicia requested the school to pay for the examinations but was denied by the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool.
She got a letter from the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool which denied her claim. They called the incident “regrettable,” and also stated that they are not liable for any damages. She said, “they will not pay for it because it’s taxpayers money and I feel like I’m a taxpayer. So, I mean, this is my son and they failed to protect him.”
Alicia wants to protect her son’s identity and hence doesn’t want to share his image.
