Reading out in class is every kid’s worst nightmare. A barber in Iowa knew every kid needed a confidence boost in reading so he decided to do something special for the kids.
Courtney Holmes, a local barber in Iowa US and a father of two, wanted to support kids and encourage their reading habits. When he got to know about the second annual Back to School Bash, he decided to offer free haircuts to kids who would agree to read to him.
Courtney did not want any small talks between his customers and him. All he was looking for is a nice story in return. “Go to the table and get a book you might like, and if you can’t read it, I’ll help you understand and we can read it together”.
“I’m looking forward to keeping this going.”
“To be honest, I was amazed. The line started with four kids, and next thing I knew it was like 20 kids, all waiting for a haircut and eager to read.”
By the time the 4-hour event ended, Courtney had almost 10 children who were still waiting in line for their haircuts. He gave them the vouchers for free cuts and asked the kids to bring a book to his salon.
